Headings and Table of Contents

Headings help organize a document by chapters, items within chapters, and to eventually create a Table of Contents for the document.  There are two common ways to set up headings.  One is the key command method.  The other method is to use the "HOME" tab of the Word ribbon.  Headings can range from Heading 1 through Heading 9.  Generally, use Headings 1 through 3, especially if you are going to braille out the document.  Following are Heading 1 through 3 key commands:

Control Alt 1 is Heading 1
Control Alt 2 is Heading 2
Control Alt 3 is Heading 3

NOTE:  If you are using ZoomText, the above key commands will not work.  You will need to use the "HOME" tab of the Word ribbon.

Inserting a Table of Contents can be done in a number of ways.  One key command method is Alt s t followed by down arrowing to the type you want and hitting the Enter key.  The ribbon method has you go to the "REFERENCES" tab of the Word ribbon, down arrowing one time, and tapping the Enter key to open the list of options, then down arrowing to the option you want, and ending with hitting the Enter key to insert the Table of Contents.

Do the following activity to create a Word document with Headings and a Table of Contents.

50.  If you add more pages or change something, move to the Table of Contents page, arrow onto it, hit the Applications key one time, down arrow to the menu item "Update field" and hit the Enter key one time.  Your Table of Contents will be updated with new items and page numbers.

NOTE:  If you have already written a document and want to put Headings into it, highlight what you want to be a Heading, and then press your Control Alt 1 2 or 3 key combination.  Release the Control and Alt keys.  Follow this by hitting the right arrow key one time to go out of highlighting mode.

Use the above concepts to create your own book, manual or research type document.
