Adding Bullet Points (List), Numbering, or Outlining
Microsoft
Word allows the creation of "bullet points" in several ways. The
Home tab of the Word "ribbon" has a section for adding bullet points
and number/outline schemes. The simple method is to press and
hold down the Shift key and tap the number 8 (above the alphabet keys).
An asterisk
is made when you do this. Type a word or words after the asterisk
and then hit Enter one time. A second bullet point is made.
Type whatever you want and then hit the Enter key one time.
A third asterisk is made. Do not type anything, but hit the
Enter key one more time and you will be out of the bullet point mode
and back to regular paragraph format.
If you wish, you
can use the "ribbon" method. Hit the Alt key one time.
Right arrow until you hear "Home" if you are not already there.
Down arrow one time. Hit the Tab key until you hear
something about "bullets." Hit Enter one time and then use your
arrow key(s) to select the type of bullet you want. Hit Enter on
your selection and it will be placed in your Word document. Just
like above, when you are done bulleting, hit Enter two times after the
last thing you typed and you will be taken out of bullet mode and back
into normal paragraphing.
Numbering in Word works very much like
bulleting. On a new line with nothing on it, type the number 1
followed by a period, then a word, and hit Enter one time. The
numbering scheme is activated. Type another word and it is
automatically assigned the number 2. Hit Enter and then hit Tab
one time. You have now been assigned the letter "a." Type a
word and then hit Enter one time and you are assigned the letter "b."
Hit the Enter key two times and you are back to numbering and are
assigned the number 3. To get out of numbering mode, hit the
Enter key one time if you are at an assigned number and two times if
you are at an assigned letter. One
nice thing about automatic numbering is that you can go to the end of a
word or phrase, hit Enter and the numbering scheme will automatically
adjust--this is good if you forgot to put something in your list.
NOTE:
When you tab to "bullet" in the HOME tab of the Word "ribbon,"
you can Tab one more time to get to "Numbering" which allow you to
select the type of numbering scheme you want. If you tab another
time you will be at the "Multi-Level List" for setting up outline
